Gerard Williams. Final Analysis 1998-99
Fosters Wellington Cup (MACmouhoo); 'Fosters Melbourne Cup', 'Mount Hood'; McGredy 1991; 'Sexy Rexy' x 'Pot O'Gold;' white; 93 reports on 148 bushes.; 16 years; 1.5 metres; 7.7 rating. I have included this under the Floribundas as most growers feel that is where it belongs. It is also interesting to note that it is now well up the list for favourite Floribundas. A large number of roses are reported on from all over the country and the reports are all favourable with its rating improving every year. In the spring the clusters are large but are small in the autumn. Some of the large heads may even need support in the spring. The bushes are healthy and tall with profuse flowering. The flowers keep well on the bush or in water. If you want a good floribunda for the Show you can't do better, but in any case it is worthy of its place in any garden.

Foster's Wellington Cup. (MACmouhoo, 'Foster's Melbourne Cup', 'Mount Hood'); McGredy 1991; 'Sexy Rexy' x 'Pot O'Gold'; white; 17 reports on 25 bushes; 1-6 years; l.4 metres; 7.7 rating. Well reported on again this year from all over the country. Some are having problems deciding whether it is a HT or a Floribunda, in spring it has large clusters of flowers and then come autumn the flowers come singly on long stems. A very healthy rose with a pleasing shape, often needs support in spring to hold up the large heads. Otago describes it adequately as a delight in the garden and is good for cutting too, the form is at its best in the summer and autumn, there is a need for some disbudding to be carried out. Bay of Plenty thinks it is a great rose, loads of flowers and it is very healthy. Northland finds the lovely big heads in the spring go well on the show bench. North Harbour notes some downy mildew in the spring. North Otago considers it a super rose which wants to be a floribunda. A Canterbury report does not like the plant habit, but says the blooms are pretty and the health good. A report from Manawatu sums it up well 'worthy of a place in any garden'.

Hybrid Tea. Foster's Wellington Cup. (MACmouhoo, 'Foster's Melbourne Cup', 'Mount Hood'); McGredy 1991; 'Sexy Rexy' x 'Pot O'Gold'; white; 21 reports on 28 bushes; 1-5 years; 1.6 metres. 7.6 rating. Well reported on this year from all over the country. Some are having problems deciding whether it is a HT or a Floribunda. In spring it has large clusters of flowers, and then come autumn the flowers come singly on long stems. A very healthy rose with a pleasing shape, often needs support in spring to hold up the large heads. A Te Awamutu report says it is a lovely vase rose, some downy mildew, Northland reports some powdery mildew, makes great small and large stems. Manawatu finds it great for floral work and does not disbud. Otago says it is delightful, stands all the vagaries of the weather, need to disbud, resists spotting in the rain, lasts well in a vase, repeats quicker than 'Sexy Rexy'. South Canterbury considers it a winner, prolific frilly blooms. It is better as a floribunda than HT, highly recommended for floral work. Franklin likes the creamy white blooms, it flowers late in the spring, Marlborough is not over pleased with the small size of the blooms, Gisbome has a weak plant and Bay of Plenty finds you need to stake it in the spring to hold up the heads. On the whole a very worthwhile rose and worth growing.

Foster's Wellington Cup. (MACmouhoo, 'Foster's Melbourne Cup'); McGredy 1991; 'Sexy Rexy' x 'Pot O'Gold'; white; 23 reports on 32 bushes; 1-4 years; 1.5 metres; 7.5 rating. More reports in on this white rose and most are good although many query the HT classification, in the spring it grows like a floribunda and puts up big trusses of blooms and the stems have trouble holding their heads up when it rains. In the autumn it comes singly as a HT and of good shape. In general the bushes are healthy with everyone except for some blackspot and spider mite damage. The bushes grow tall and strong with dark glossy foliage, the repeat of bloom is very slow. A Waikato grower says she is discarding as it comes with deformed flowers like Brussel Sprouts - sounds like Hunter's Colourbreak virus to me! Most find it requires a lot of disbudding, the blooms small, it picks well and is a good vase rose. A Manawatu grower finds it more satisfactory than 'Auckland Metro' as it is less damaged by rain. Otago disappointed so far with poor plant, Northland has good success growing from cuttings. South Canterbury apart from some black spot rates the frilly flowers highly better than the name.

Foster's Wellington Cup. (MACmouhoo, Foster's Melbourne Cup); McGredy 1991; 'Sexy Rexy' x
'Pot O'Gold'; white; 17 reports on 40 bushes; 1-2 years; 1.5 metres; 7.4 rating. The rating has been brought down by reports from Waikato and Rotorua who both received poor plants. Other reports are pleased and rate around 8. Many query the classification as a HT as most consider it performs more like a Floribunda with clusters of flowers. The bushes are strong and healthy with glossy green foliage. The blooms are well formed with many petals and the stems can fall over in the wet due to the weight. Late to flower in the spring and repeat is slow. Blooms tend to come singly in the autumn. A very promising and worthwhile rose.
