Ron Bell. What’s In a Name. ….An important event is often a good opportunity to produce a rose to celebrate the occasion and can have a big effect on sales. The Australian Bicentennary was such an occasion and the Bicentennary Authority requested the selected rose be named The Australian Bicentennial Rose to mark the event. This name although rather a mouthful assured the sales of the rose for the benefit of the Rose Convention held in Sydney.

p71 Barry Johnson. The Birth of a Bicentennial Rose Garden. The garden has been designed to emphasize certain themes, qualities and historical aspects of rose culture. Of course, the first and foremost consideration was the main reason for the creation of the rose garden – The Australian Bicentenary which, has not only been signified by the inclusion of the mandatory commemorative plaque, but also by a display of the beautiful Australian Bicentennial Rose which, completely surrounds the central gazebo. The ‘Bicentennial Rose’ has a medium red colour, with good substance, vigour and fragrance as was hybridised by Mr. Ron Bell of Harkaway, Victoria.
