Newsletter (Oct 1999) Page(s) 27. Vol 20, No. 4. Eileen Blake, 38 Colville St., Masterton. Letter to the Editor. Re the article on Prince de Bulgarie by Rex Thompson of Otago. A cutting of this rose was given to me by a friend, from an friend's old homestead garden, the bush, estimated to be at least 100 years old at the time, unfortunately has died. My cutting has survived and is now a good sized bush. I also know of a further two gardens with this rose, from the same source. Like Rex, my friend also stated, I would not find it listed in any catalogue, so I was interested to know Rex had discovered a listing in an old 1916 Rose book. The flower is certainly lovely in colour and shape and another beautiful bonus is the continual flowering. My bush still has buds on it (late July) although the frosts have ruined them. I have now put all prunings into sand, hoping they will root. Anyone wanting cuttings next year, I will be happy to forward them.
Newsletter (Jul 1999) Page(s) 16. Vol 20, No. 3. Rex Thomson, Otago. Southern Clippings. Prince de Bulgarie...... as I viewed a lovely flesh coloured rose with perhaps a touch of salmon that a friend had brought me from her garden. "It's an old rose call Prince of Bulgaria that my mother planted years ago" she told me, and it certainly had the delicate look of an old tea rose or perhaps an early hybrid tea.
