Lustre d'église Netherlans, before 1790. Synonyms: Duchesse d'Orléans (according to Noisette, 1826). Grande pivoine (according to Pirolle, 1826). La grandesse royale (according to Le Rouge, 1819). Pivoine des Hollandais (according to Le Rouge, 1819). Pourpre double (according to Noisette, 1826). Habit: 0.80 m, upright, prickles and bristles. Foliage: light, elliptical and serrated leaflets. Bloom: solitary or in clusters of 2 to 3, small, double, cupped; petals reflex slightly; small green-yellow eye at the centre. Colour: stained pink at the centre, lighter at the periphery, ages to violetish. Fragrance: moderate. ...In 1819, Le Rouge describes this variety as "deep pink as hydrangea, almost crimson", and in 1838, Chesnel notes "red passing to hydrangea". Le Rouge confirms, as his synonym, 'Pivoine des Hollandais', which makes suppose that this rose came from Holland. ...In any case, it is before 1790, as it is listed at that date in the catalogue of the nerseryman François. It is also in that of J.-L. Descemet of Saint-Denis, in 1803...

Illustrated in Les Roses by Redouté. Marie Amélie, duchesse d'Orléans, was the wife of Louis-Philippe who became king of France in 1830. Adélaide d'Orléans, their daughter, was one of Redouté's pupils, and a rambler was named after her.
