I have had Veterans Honor growing in my garden for 3years now, this rose is one of the first i planted in my garden of 88. I purchased this as a J&P rose from Lowels. We have had our problems, i must say, i luv the color and form and scent of the veteran but, iam concern with its growing habit, my rose only grows on new wood, for the first 2years i just let it grow, it only gave up a few blooms, then just stopped blooming. Last season, it was prunned and it gave up many blooms, later in the season again, it stopped blooming until i prunned it again. So for this reason this growing season 2011, i have ordered a replacement rose (Black Magic) an i will be shoveling the Veteran this march,(with a heavy heart). I wanted to get a new one and try it again but iam just to afraid the same thing will happen. With limited space in my garden i must choose wisely. Has anyone else had this problem with the Veterans Honor?

I have 4 Veteran's Honors. They are almost always in bloom. They will blackspot if I don't keep them sprayed. Mine came from Jim Mills at K & M Nursery in Buckatunna, Mississippi and are on Fortuniana root stock.

Very easy to grow. Produces loads of big red roses. Mine has some black spot issues, but thrives anyway.

This rose lasts over two weeks when cut and I didn't do anything special to make it that way. The form stays perfect in the vase and it smells nice and blooms well also.

I recently purchased Veteran's Honor on fortuniana rootstock. From what I've heard this rose bush and the blooms can get quite big on this rootstock. After consulting many rose experts - I decided to plant it in a raised bed because fortuniana needs good drainage, and my soil is mostly clay. I was going to plant it in a very large pot, but from what I was told, on fortuniana rootstock, in a few years it would have become root bound. We'll see what happens!
