Pat Mason's fine HT 'Maorilander' had always been a difficult shade to place happily among the reds and I moved it among the 'Sterling Silvers' where the contrast showed it to perfection and it is now in its element, producing masses of large rich plum-coloured exhibition type flowers as a central focal point in the garden arrangement.

p106. 'Maorilander' HT (Mason, 1955). Raised from 'Mme. A. Meilland' and 'Crimson Glory', this is a strong grower producing freely well-formed red flowers. In November, 1956, I saw the original seedling in the raiser's garden near Auckland, N.Z. It was surrounded by plants budded from it and the group made a fine sight. By modern standards the red colouring is a little dull in my opinion - it seems to lack "fire". Well up to show standard when grown well.

p64. Frank Penn. Roses in Great Britain. Oaklands Trial Grounds. The only rose on trial raised in New Zealand, so far as I could gather, was 'Maorilander' raised by Miss Pat Mason, of Manurewa, Auckland. The plants were not doing well when I saw them, but it must be remembered that in the previous February on several days there were frosts of from 20 to 27 degrees, and it could hardly be expected that a rose raised in semi-tropical Auckland could be seen at its best so soon after such a freezing. This rose has won commendation from many New Zealand rosarians.
