Some All-Canadian Roses
by Fred Blakeney, Victoria, B.C.
Mr. Percy Wright of Saskatoon, Sask., must be considered one of the foremost hybridizers of species and near species roses in North America. He has been working on these roses for many years, and knows the reactions of various hardy roses when crossed with species roses.
His objective has always been to produce worthwhile garden roses that are hardy enough to withstand the extremely low temperatures of the Prairies in winter. [...]
Here is a list of Mr. Wright's originations in chronological order of introduction:
1940 "Little Betty", double, small pale pink.

Little Betty (Percy H. Wright; Betty Bland x R. sufulta) is another excellent little shrub. It is like a miniature Betty Bland in all respects. 3½' x 3½'.

"LITTLE BETTY* - in effect a pale variant of Betty Bland, and slightly smaller. It is very fertile, and we are introducing it chiefly for the use of those who are interested in breeding new hardy roses."

Rosa Suffulta as a Parent
Percy H. Wright
The fourth hybrid, Little Betty, I have no exact record of, but the evidences of the plant indicate that it is either Betty Bland by single Suffulta or Blanda by Woodrow. It grows about 3 1/2 feet high, is double, pale pink, with a small, neat flower. It is extremely prolific and has welcomed the pollen of every rose I have given it, having returned many seeds even to the pollen of Austrian Copper and Persian Yellow. It was 100 per cent hardy in the past winter, though at the corner of the house, almost free of snow and exposed to all the winds that blew. This summer I discovered that it would layer readily.
