Prince Frédéric Gallica. Louis-Joseph-Ghislain Parmentier (Enghien, Belgium) ca. 1840.

Prince Frédéric Parmentier (Belgium) (?), before 1846. Synonym: Frédéric de Mérode (?). Habit: upright shrub; 1.20 m high, 1 m wide; large hooked prickles, bristles. Foliage: light green; quite pointed leaflets, often 7 per leaf; finely reddish veined at the edges of young foliage. Bloom: most often in clusters of 3; small, cupped; reflexed petals; reminds of pompon roses; rosette and minute eye in the centre. Colour: vivid purple, strongly shaded violet, wine yeast-colour or pink. Fragrance: weak. This variety might be from Louis Parmentier, the Belgian breeder from the beginning of the XIXth century, at Enghien. However, it does not show up under this name in the collection of his roses which were sold after his death in 1847. According to F. Mertens, the former director of the magazine Rosa belgica, it might have the synonym 'Frédéric de Mérode', one of his [Parmentier] cultivars, which figures in the list of that sale (no. 0338).
