We have three competing parentages: Several of the very earliest sources, as well as Dean Hole and Veitch, call it a seedling from 'Louise Peyronny'; magazine The Gardener of 1870 (p. 367) has it as a seedling from 'Lœlia' (sic: 'Lælia'); and more recent publications (as Stammbuch der Edelrosen, by Georg Krüger, 1906, p. 17) have it as from ‘Géant des Batailles’ (HP) × ‘Victor Verdier’ (HP).
