Responding further to the comment in one of the 'Nigger Boy' photos.
You have a special rose Mr. P. Roger and I am grateful you have conserved it from your parents garden. In case we ever find something similar in Australia, we would really appreciate any comment or photo, even down to the bare winter canes of the whole bush; a close-up of the prickles side-on: and the same for the bud and pedicel. Could you also tell us how high and wide your bush is, and if it was own-root or budded. This is now an 85-year-old rose and I know there are people in Australia still searching for it because the references spoke so highly of 'Nigger Boy'.

To me in Australia, it is a name that conjures up dark red fragrant roses - and who doesn't love them.
Australian breeders were also looking for dark red, blackish roses. I will quote from Eric Timewell's 2012 book Frank Riethmuller. life and Roses page 27: The Australian film Jedda came out in 1955..... it added piquancy that the film's aboriginal star had a German surname: Ngarla Kunoth. Riethmuller's rose Ngarla [1955] came out in the same year as the film. It is perhaps the Riethmuller rose whose loss is to be most regretted. George Knight's Nigger Boy [1931] was "blackish maroon". Alister Clark's Black Boy [<1918] is dark red and Olive Fitzhardinge's Lubra [1938] is even darker. We can be sure 'Ngarla' was a dark red.

My mother grew this rose in the 1950's. She didn't like the name, but the color was exquisite.

Hello Kuj,
I notice in the references 'Nigger Boy' had been referred to as looking like a floribunda (Thomas, 1952) and a polyantha (Hennessey 1954) but I understand it was in fact a hybrid tea. In case we ever come up against it in Australia, what is your memory of what it looked like? And how high was your bush?
It really did sound a beautiful thing and it had impeccable parents.

Patricia...........

I went through all of the REFERENCES you added to HMF about this rose and culled as much information as I could from them and added them to the plant page. Of course, that is not as effective as having someone who has grown the rose offering information about the rose in their gardens, but it's a start.

Smiles,
Lyn
