Also this rose was introduced in Australia in the '20. Is it lost or hidden somewhere? In due time I will get photos of the flowers (also of Kenigin Luise and Alice Stern).

I doubt if 'General Smuts' is in Australia now Bruna. Hazlewood listed in in their 1924 catalogue but not in their 1925, 1926 or 1930 catalogues.

I am desperately seeking any information on the General Smuts rose - hybridised by Gerald Adriaan Van Rossem from the General MacArthur and the Madame Edouard Herriot. Jan Christiaan was my father's uncle and we are hoping to find some evidence, if not the real thing, for his garden for his 80th birthday next year.

You might try to contact the Europarosarium Sangerhausen, where it still grows: http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=3.4068 They propagate their roses, when asked and paid for. And to Great Britain import rules are not as strict as to the USA. My friend Marnix got some roses propagated from that garden in the past. Good luck with Your Quest.

Many thanks Jay-Jay - I will see if they still have the rose as it is not coming up on their database...not that I speak German.
Thanks again for the lead.

If You want me to, I might ask Marnix, another HMF member, who has a direct (human) link to one of the gardeners in that Rosarium. And I would gladly talk to and ask them in German, if this rose still exists and whether it would be possible for them to propagate it and sell it to You. ...Or else You might contact by phone (for the link is not working) the other garden Rosenhang Karben that harbours the Gerneral Smuts rose too as for the info on HMF.
