...Hoes were not used in the ornamental garden [of Sir Frederick Stern]; weeds were controlled by hand with the result that interesting seedlings were preserved. One in particular has become famous, the rose 'Highdownensis', a seedling of Rosa moyesii with not only many flowers in bunches, but great drooping heads of large heps as well.
