Rosa hispida (Sims.) By M. Geier, Garden administrator, Mittenwald.
...I planted a number of shrubs hereof in Spring 1916; they developed quite well until now, bloomed surprisingly beuatiful and rich this year....yellowish-white blooms on the short shrubs...Rosa hispida is among the early-blooming shrub roses one of the most beautiful, faithful and undemanding, furthermore it is fully hardy. It resisted the rough mountain climate here at 950 m....
The blooming period is beginning to end of May depending on location and weather. Young shoots are produced from the eyes of last year's canes, on which are solitary the large up to 8 cm diameter single blooms. They are of pretty, ivory-white colour, with a yellowish tone in the centre. This [tone] is pleasantly prominent when expanding, but pales with time. Numerous yellow stamens decorate the centre. A pleasant wild rose fragrance emanates the bloom, whose petals cover each other so that it has a beautiful closed, flat form when expanded. The canes are densely covered with weak bristles which have a reddish colour when young. The strong young canes have a firm upright habit. Foliage is abundant; the mostly 7 leaflets have a sharply serrated edge, dark green above, lighter underneath. Many short side shoots are formed. This rose should not be pruned before blooming. Its fruit starts to ripen in late summer, they have a globular form and colour brwonish black when ripe. This rose forms dense stocky bushes....
