As no doubt some of our members are aware, a very unsatisfactory situation with respect to Rose names has arisen within the past few years due to the practice of certain large commercial firms in re-naming Roses of European origin, contrary to and in defiance of "International Rules of Botanical Nomenclature" and its supplementary schedule known as Appendix VII (Nomenclature of Garden Plants).

Harry H. Hazlewood. The New Roses of 1950. 
President Nomblot HT. (Mallerin 1945).  A.A.R.S. 1945. ....This variety, although still correctly listed in French catalogues under the name of 'President Nomblot', has been changed in U.S.A. to Horace McFarland, which is a shocking anti-climax to three efforts to really honour a man who did so much for roses the world over.  First Mallerin named 'Editor McFarland' as a whole hearted tribute.  This was followed by Howard and Smith with 'The Doctor' and later on by Dr. Lammerts with 'The Chief'.  For Dr. McFarland to be asked to accept any "left-over" honour is altogether inexplicable, particularly as it is contrary to the spirit if not the letter of the American Rose Society's rules governing names.

Novelty Roses 1950. Professor Nomblot (H.T.) (Mallerin, 1944) Deep apricot buds opening to rich buff salmon which changes to a pleasing coral pink. The flowers are large with 40 to 45 petals and carry a spicy fragrance. Plants have shown signs of dying back in the climate. This variety has been renamed Horace McFarland in U.S.A. a tribute to a great American who deserved better of his fellow men. A.A.R.S., 1945. 10/6 each.

President Nomblot (2 plants, 1 year). Large well formed blooms of a bright apricot colour - something new, especially among specimen blooms. Good grower. A great rose. Called Horace McFarland in America.

Horace McFarland. (Correct name-President Nomblot). This rose grew well but it was hard to keep the mildew down.
