Sally Allison. (In Sue Zwar’s garden, Camawald, SA.) ……and there was a rambler known in South Australia as Katie Pianto’s Rose, is actually a seedling from Katie Pianto’s garden, a garden of a very special lady no longer with us, but the person and the rose I got to know many years ago. A nostalgic moment.
Fiona Hyland. (in Dallas Sturtevant’s, NZ garden) ….And of roses? There were many, but the ones that particularly stuck in my mind were: Fantin Latour frolicking way up in one tree; the Balmain Rambler in another….

Sue Zwar. Near to the tower in the middle of the [Ruston] garden was a huge mound covered with soft pink single flowers. This rose, probably a chance seedling, has both ‘Indica Major’ and R. multiflora in its ancestry and in Sydney is known as the “The Balmain Rose”. In South Australia it is called “The Katie Pianto Rose” after the person who brought cuttings of this beautiful plant to our part of the world. David’s plant started life under an old walnut tree which has long since died, fallen over and been smothered.

Maureen Ross: Often a rose is named after the place it was found…… or after the original garden owner as with Katie Pianto’s rose.

Dear Editors, I would like to acknowledge the passing on September 28th, 2000, of an early South Australian HRA member – Katie Pianto. I recall, as a new and nervous member, Katie warmly welcomed me into the group. Katie’s floral displays using the old roses at our early shows, her magnificent bush of Raubritter with its nodding cupped pink blooms, the glorious sight of oldies cascading down a sheer cliff at Katie and Jack’s home, and Katie’s obvious love of the old roses, are some of the memories I will treasure. My large bush of the ‘Katie Pianto rose’ will always remind me of this gracious and charming lady. Katie will be sadly missed by the South Australian HRA members. Pat Toolan, Keyneton, SA 5353

Sally Allison:  (Slide No. 24). Multiflora Cathayensis.  We first saw this rose in Gillian Batchen's garden in Sydney where it has been given the circular clothes line on which to romp and far, far further,  Later in Adelaide after the Conference in 1986 Katie Pianto gave me the cutting which is this bush.  Very floriferous for its short flowering season, when in full flush the flowers obscure the leaves - an amazing sight.

Deane Ross:  The rose nicknamed Pianto is a mystery, but worth growing for the spectacular display in the spring.  It looks close to 'Francis E. Lester' in the bloom but the foliage suggests wichuraiana blood.
