Great find, Patricia, of the Law Somner catalogue and Petersen catalogue! Which is the correct 'Souvenir of Stella Gray? I'd be inclined to think that the Law Somner catalogue would be the accurate one because they were a bigger firm and that Petersen only copied and relabelled Law Somner's photos. Also it appears that the Law Somner catalogue is probably the earlier one. However, I'm just speculating. I guess the best solution would be to go through the roses and see which ones seem most accurately depicted from known specimens/photos.

'Souvenir of Stella Gray' is intriguing because it persisted in Hazlewood's catalogue (Sydney) long past the usual date of Teas, and it was quite rare elsewhere, so it must have had something going for it.

I had wondered for a long time whether the orange Tea foundling in the Barbara May Garden in Sydney's Rookwood Cemetery was in fact really 'Souvenir of Stella Gray'.

Does that foundling still exist? Or is it kaput now?

It was still there when I last last visited nearly a year ago. I believe it's been in the same spot for years. Not a big bush. Distinctly orange shades with a nice fragrance if I remember correctly. The few photos I took last time were terrible as there was so little out in bloom and it's in an awkward spot in the bed to photograph easily.

It seems that there was a colour plate of 'Souvenir of Stella Gray' in Dickson's 1907/08 catalogue.

From the weekly periodical 'Horticulture', Dec 28, 1907, page 856, published in Boston, Mass., they report on the catalogues they've received:

"CATALOGUES RECEIVED. [...] Alex. Dickson & Sons, Ltd., Newtownards, Ireland.—Rose catalogue for 1907 and 1908. Colored plates of Avoca crimson, Harry Kirk yellow, Elizabeth Barnes salmon rose. Souvenir de Stella Gray orange, Dorothy Page Roberts coppery pink, all pedigree seedling roses for 1907. are inserted and add to the attractiveness of this very comprehensive list which describes in full some eight hundred varieties of roses in the various classes."

If only it would turn up.

It would be interesting, but any surviving copy may not be accurate for colour after more than a century.

Souvenir of Stella Gray.— A Tea variety, with charming buds of a soft yellow shade; when open the petals assume a ruddy tint. The blooms are of small size.
