Henri Guisan was elected by the Swiss Parliament as Commander in Chief and General on August 30, 1939. He is said to have kept Switzerland out of the war with his concept of "Reduit" (heavily arming the Alpes as a bastion). General Guisan left his command on August 20, 1945.
