'Arcadian' rose Reviews & Comments

I bought New Year as a body bag at the beginning of last year. I potted it up, got it started, plopped it in the ground, and left it alone. I'm not sure if it's because she was a body bag rose, but New Year ended up being a little bit of a dumpy, short plant. Bushy, bloomed a lot, took the heat well, bright color...just kinda short. We will see how it does year 2, but I feel like this is going to fall into that "beginner rose" category. It seems to be an easy one, a good all arounder, but not spectacular in any particular thing.
Year 2 update: New Year is going to end up getting the shovel this spring. It's fine. But, the blooms are fairly small and they just don't do it for me. I had rather have something I'm more interested in that something I walk by and ignore even when it's covered in blooms.

I think the first picture of this rose is incorrect, and the other two are correct. I have never seen a New Year rose with a striped petal. Is it possible this is the another rose? I've only seen the solid orange color.

All three are photos of the same plant.

New year was introduced into the United States by Certified Roses where it won the AARS award in 1987

I'm not sure but I am with them every day so if I get my feeble memory to work I'll try to remember to ask them tomorrow.

I LOVE THIS ROSE. I GOT IT BARE ROOT TOWARDS THE END OF THE BUYING SEASON DISCOUNTED FOR LIKE 2 BUCKS AND IT HAS GROWN AND GROWN WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS AND AMAZING FOLIAGE. IT IS IN A VERY DRY AND HARSE SPOT OF MY ROSE GARDEN UP AGAINST THE BACK WALL OF ONE OF MY GAZEBO'S AND THE THING ACTS LIKE I HAVE BEEN PAMPERING IT. THIS ROSE SHOULD BE MORE POPULAR, I HAD NEVER EVEN HEARD OF IT BEFORE I SAW IT IN THE STORE, ODD, ITS ONLY IN A COUPLE OF MY ROSE BOOKS AND NOT MUCH INFO IS GIVEN. THE COLOR SEEMS TO CHANGE (LIKE MOST ROSES) ACCORDING TO THE AMOUNT OF SUN AND HEAT THROUGHT OUT THE DAY, BUT WHAT EVER THE FLOWER IT PRODUCES THEY ARE ALL BEAUTIFUL. A+++

Mattpdx, Please note the new rating system for plants. It's much more extensive then the old "favorites" voting. We hope to compile all the ratings, and if we have enough data (voters), we anticipate running some statistical analysis software to look for correlations in climate, soil conditions, etc. Everyone can help out now, and reap the benefits later, by rating the plants you have experience with and tell us more about your growing conditions; soil; temperatures; watering habits; etc.

I've had New Year for a number of years and it is a nice rose. If you are in a Winter zone please note it needs to be protected. I've found it is among the last of the roses to bloom in the Spring. The blooms are so pleasing I tend to forgive its tardiness.
