....only a solitary, terminal flower is fully developed without additional flower buds, the condition seen in the majority of individuals of P. anomala. Rarely in P. anomala may there be one or two underdeveloped flower buds in the upper leaf axils. In such cases, both conditions, i.e., with or without additional underdeveloped flower buds, may be observed within a single population of P. anomala.

Anomala means unusual, and refers to the finely divided leaves which turn orange brown in autumn... [flowers are] magenta red to crimson rose, the best being brilliant red with yellow stamens. The roots, which grow very large, are cooked and eaten by Mongol Tartars.

Anomala (unusual—referring to the leaves, which are finely divided). Siberia. Stated by some writers to be the same as P. Emodi, which it very evidently is not. First mentioned in Flora Siberica (St. Petersburg, 1747.) Flowers with irregular petals of a brilliant red and with clusters of yellow stamens. The roots grow to great size and are used by the Mongol Tartars for food.

Peonia Anomala, Linn. From Europe and Asia, with finely dissected, smooth foliage. Solitary, single, bright crimson flowers, and distinct in the large size of the petals and the peculiar compound, leaflike sepals. Two feet. May. Its varieties, Insignis, Peter Barr, Smoutti and Intermedia are now recognized, being more distinct in the character of foliage than otherwise.
