With iron resolution I have cut out many old friends, in order that this list be confined to the main stepping stones which mark the descent of roses, either genetically or in man's awareness, decade by decade. But I am only human, and cannot be unfaithful to 'Polly'.  This lovely thing is is like a well-filled 'Ophelia', plump bottomed but comely, sea-shell pale and full of sweet odours. If this sounds like one writing of his mistress, I may add that her limbs are smooth, and she ought to be well fed and cared for, being a tender thing.  She must be kept in order for she will spend herself in a multitude of buds, and lose her beauty unless they are reduced in number. From an 'Ophelia' seedling x 'Mme. Colette Martinet', introduced 1927 by G. Beckwith & Son, Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire.

Beckwith and Sons, two years later, gave us another lovely Rose in Polly, which is very similar to Ladylove, but has more gold shade and generally has a more compact bloom.
