Bred by Thomas Rivers & Son Ltd. (United Kingdom, circa 1817).
Introduced in Australia by F. C. Davis in 1862 as 'George IV'.
Class:
Hybrid China, Hybrid Gallica.  
Bloom:
Dark purple to violet-red, red center, crimson reverse.  Mild fragrance.  Average diameter 2.5".  Medium, full (26-40 petals), cupped, expanded , globular bloom form.  Once-blooming spring or summer.  
Habit:
Few or no prickles/thorns.  Glossy, dark green foliage.  
Growing:
USDA zone 6b through 9b (default).
