With reference to Edna Walling’s roses, I think that the latter called Golden Showers was a rose I knew as 'Shower of Gold' which I bought from Hazelwood’s Nursery years ago when we came to live in Sydney. I dearly loved both roses but a heinous crime was committed by the builder who was adding an addition to our house. Both roses were climbing up one side of a patio and I thought there was enough room for 'Shower of Gold' to be kept, but he cut or hacked rather, both so badly, that they never recovered. I was out at the time. Edna Walling’s description of the foliage of 'Shower of Gold' is exact, so bright and shiny, but I felt it was more like 'Dearest' in shape than 'Cécile Brunner'; instead of pink it was the most beautiful deep yellow with rosette flowers. I have asked at many nurseries since, about this rose and even put an enquiry years ago in the Heritage Roses Bulletin. It is not in any catalogue I have seen, nor in Dianne Ackland’s ‘The Australian Rose Directory’.....It seems a shame that such a beauty would be lost in Australia and I suppose if one sent to New Zealand for it, it would have to go into quarantine for months. Modern Rambler. Medium yellow. This rose is a quarter Rosa wichuriana and three-quarters Large-Flowered Rose with a dash of ‘Persian Yellow’(R. foetida). The fragrant, large rosette-shaped flowers are deep yellow, fading to white, and appear in clusters. The foliage is glossy and fern-like and the plant, while vigorous, does not repeat-flower. It is readily available in New Zealand, but elsewhere it unfortunately seems to have lost the popularity it enjoyed between the wars. Zones 5-9. Paul, UK 1910. ‘Jersey Beauty’ x ‘Instituteur Sirdey’

‘Shower of Gold’ (1910) This excellent hybrid used to be very popular between the two World Wars and it is nice to see it is available again. It is a very vigorous grower and has double rosette-like flowers of golden yellow which pale later to lemon yellow.

Wichuraiana and other Rambling Roses
The varieties comprising these classes are of unique and charming beauty, and form lovely objects in the garden while in bloom. They are suitable for rockery, sloping banks, pillars, pergolas, arches, etc. They are very lovely grown as standards.
