The rose sold in nowaday china under the name "feng zhuang lou 粉妆楼" is Clothilde Soupert, so are the pictures posted under this entry. Chinese growers use these two names interchangeably now. According to some history records, there was an ancient chinese breed of rose called feng zhuang lou, meaning pink tower, which was likely a pink climber or rambler, and this ancient breed is now lost in china. Clothilde Soupert was introduced to china from japanese market very long ago, I don't know if it was named "feng zhuang lou" in japan or in china, but its aesthetics somehow fits the meaning of feng zhuang lou. For a very long time, because of the naming, people indeed thought CS was an old chinese breed.
p.s. names such as" feng zhuang lou" are considered very ancient styled for modern chinese. This creates confusions with many other roses that are categorized as "old chinese rose" in modern chinese market. Old european bred tea and old HTs that are introduced to china earlier in the last century are usually mistakenly put in this category because of their style of naming.

Referring to the origin of this rose, I may have erroneously given the wrong source. The rose was introduced (and given to me) into Europe by Helga Brichet. I have received the following email from Mr Ueda:
I am Yoshihiro Ueda and researcher of roses.
I read the explanation about Fen Zhang Lou in Help me fined Roses. I was very surprised at explanation \' discovered by Katsuhiko Maebara and me\'.
Did you write it ?
The origin of Fen Zhang Lou is not clear and we did not discover it.
Please correct the explanation of Fen Zhang Lou.
Best wishes,
Yoshihiro Ueda (Dr.), Professor of Gifu International Academy of Horticulture

Discoverers deleted. It is nice to hear that Dr. Ueda is looking into HMF. We hope for more articles on rose research.

Yes, we are always interested on articles about rose research.
The HMF Ezine has languished because we receive so few article submissions.
