Margaret Furness:  Some years ago a southern nursery sent out “Camnethan Cherry-red” (aka “Susan Irvine’s Pink Tea”) labelled Beauty of Rosemawr. The mix-up appears to have been a straight swap, as two Queensland nurseries received Beauty of Rosemawr (China, before 1902) labelled “Susan Irvine’s Pink Tea” (identified by Billy West).

Margaret Furness, Mystery Teas in Australia.
“Camnethan Cherry Red”, collected by Susan Irvine in central Victoria.
Medium to large flowers, semidouble to double, growing singly or in clusters. The petals are velvety red with a silver reverse, and an occasional white stripe suggesting that it is a China-Tea. Outer petals form a point, inner ones have a rolled-back edge. The stamens are exposed when flowers are fully open. There is a strong, soft Tea scent with fruity and floral notes. Blooms in flushes, with good winter flowering. Hips are small for a Tea, globular and orange. Tall bush, usually upright.

(at Camnethan Homestead, Smeaton, Victoria – visiting Louie Wilson) ……She shook her head sadly and explained that there was no garden left. She was ninety-five years old and the garden had been made by her late husband’s grandfather. On a hasty calculation I estimated that that put it back well into the last century. ….. Louie was happy for me to take cuttings of … and the only other surviving rose, a cheerful cherry-red with Tea rose foliage, which was also in full flower on a bush the size of a small tree. This one, Louie said, gave her great joy as she was too old now to go into the garden, but could see it from the window.
