'Pergolèse' (France, Moreau-Robert 1860) ...I was disappointed in the first two summers: a garish magenta-red grinned at me each time I passed by. And the promised rebloom...failed to materialize. In the third summer such a beautiful rose emerged from the ugly duckling: The garish tones became a mild, lighter purple-red and cherry-red, fading to lilac-purple. The blooms are now very similar to those of Gallicas. The inner petals lie like curly locks around the green eye, which is sometimes yellow. ....This time she gave me at the end of summer a couple of blooms.

Gallicas. 'Pergolese'. G. No rebloom. Outstanding fragrance. Habit 1. Moreau and Robert, 1960. [Provenance San Jose Heritage Rose Garden] small, double, rounded, rather formal flowers are deep amaranth purple shaded slatey blue and pale lilac with a green pointel in the center. This is not a portland but a Gallica hybrid, but is the name is [sic] correct, and did Moreau introduce a Portland rose different from this? We offer what is grown elsewhere the same.

Portland-Roses...'Pergolèse' (Robert et Moreau 1860, F). Giovanni Pergolèse was a composer of opera and ecclestiacal music from Naples. The interesting colouring of this rose is similar to those of Gallicas. She has less than medium size blooms, which are flat and nicely quartered. They vary in colour from cherry-red to purple-lilac with darker shading, sometimes even showing a green eye. The small, fragrant clusters look nice anong the dark green foliage of the upright shrub. The variety does not always rebloom. 1,2m tall.

Gallicas. 'Pergolese'. (1860). Possibly classified incorrectly but does not prevent it from being an attractive rose with bright purplish-crimson medium-sized flowers, very double and very fragrant. Will have some late flowers and will grow to more than a metre. Blossoms can also be quartered and have a green pointed in the centre.
