Although garden roses have been popular in India from the time of the Moghuls, there appears to have been no Indian raised varities of cultivated roses until the beginning of the last century. The earliest record available is of the variety 'Dr. S. D. Mukherjee' (1935) bred by B. K. Roy Chaudhury and 'Ramakrishna Dev' by B. S. Bhattacharji (1941).
