One plant that must be included in the exotics, and which settled here in the same year [1568] as the Marvel of Peru [Mirabilis jalapa], is the passion Flower. It was first called Flos Passionis, or, as John Tradescant named it in the following century, Amaracock sive Clematis Virginiana; Linnaeus in the eighteenth century gave it the name with which we are familiar, Passiflora incarnata.

The plant in America is called the May Apple : it is also denominated the Maracoc or Mat/cock, by some authors ; but these are evidently corruptions of Maracot, the Peruvian name of the Passion Flower.....
If we might rely on the authority of our old authors, this particular plant has long been known in the English gardens. Parkinson, whose Paradisus was first published in 1629, describes it as cultivated at that time, growing about a yard and an half high, and bearing flowers (but not fruit), in July and August; he calls it the Maracot sive Clematis Virginiana, and mentions, that the roots came from Virginia.

[This reference of Parkinson to Clematis is not the species we are referring to]
