‘Bullata’/’Lettuce-leaved Rose’/Rosa x centifolia bullata/’Rose à feuilles de laitue’ = Centifolia… arbuste à port souple, d’environ 1m50 en tous sens… longs rameaux arqués vert sombre… aiguillons rougeâtres… grandes folioles vert pomme cloquées comme des feuilles de laitue… petits boutons ronds et denses, groupés en bouquets légers… fleurs très doubles d’un rose limpide, formées d’une multitude de pétales imbriqués. Il déteste l’humidité… Avant 1815. Ascendance inconnue.

It can only be perpetuaed as a graft, and as such it is delicate and short-lived. In our rose garden at Belleville near Paris we have tried to get it on its own roots by layering, but obtained only sparse bushes with inferior blooms...

Back in the days of the Empress Joséphine, gardeners treasured several forms of R. centifolia distinguished by their unusual leaves: the 'celery-leafed', ' the 'peach-leafed' and others. This one, the 'lettuce-leafed', is apparently the only survivor today... flowers: like R. centifolia, sweet pink in color. Parentage: sport from R. centifolia
