The account of his work which follows is exceedingly interesting, and is best given in Mr. Montgomery's own words: "Realizing that my education would not be complete without some knowledge of the hybridizer's art, I started to dabble in Rose seedlings, and in 1899 produced my first batch. Of course, at first, my great ambition was to produce seeds and to make the seeds germinate. This much I accomplished. I do not remember the number, but of the lot, the one marked No. 7 was the only one worthy of notice, and this was the truest pink I have ever seen in a Rose. I now had something definite to strive for and immediately set about to reproduce this color in a forcer (and by the way, I haven't done it yet.) "Referring to my records, I find that No. 7 was a cross between Madame Chatenay and Marquise Litta. ...
