Medium size, aster purple, midseason. Carpels smooth, tips dark red; disk conspicuous, pink. Plant large, erect; flowers showing well above foliage.

Notes on the Newer Peonies, Season 1932

Of the peonies put out by this grower, I think I have nearly all, but many of them have not been observed very carefully by me. Some of them have as yet failed to make good. I shall comment on only the few that are well known to me.
Winnebago Chief. Even more so than the former [Purple Cup], this seems to me to be one of the very best red singles I have in my garden and there are many. It is very tall and has excellent stems.
