Young canes of Rosa webbiana tend to be extremely thorny but become less thorny as they grow thick and woody. This is perhaps webbiana's system of defence against Himalayan Ibex who love to eat webbiana leaves. Only young and soft canes have leaves..... hence lots of thorns.
