p65. Mornington Dawns [by] Barry Johnson
In 2004, just when I was contemplating thoughts of retirement, the phone rang and without my usual (Telemarketing) caution, I answered it. On the other end was a hitherto unknown person, Don Gordon from Mornington. Don said: "I hear you were responsible to designing the Morwell Rose Garden?" After a .cautious "yes" (followed by a mental: "uh oh!") Don went on. "We're planning a similar venture in Mornington and we'd love you to come down and have a look?" Déjà vu! Barry says: OK" (I need therapy) and off to Mornington I go. There I meet larger-than-life Don whose enthusiasm for the project knows no bounds. He proposed that a public rose garden be created in the open space precinct adjacent to the Regional art gallery. This was a lightly used off-the-Iead dog exercising paddock directly between the Regional and Oakhill Art Galleries. Don and I set about doing the 'Dance of the Doggie Do Do' surveying this north-facing and gently sloping site overlooking a small lake and bird sanctuary, bounded by the Mornington – Tyabb and Dunn's Rds.

This article by Barry Johnson is three pages of the same very readable material on the making of the Mornington Rose Garden.]
