The Tallin Botanic Garden was started 1951 at the Institute of Experimental Biology of the Academy of Sciences of Estonia (in the vicinity of Tallinn). Plants were moved to their permanent location of the Garden at Pirita, in the eastern part of Tallinn, in 1959. The official opening of Tallinn Botanic Garden of the Academy of Sciences (TBG) took place on 1 December 1961. It comprises 160 hectares.
