Rosa suionum Almq. is an old cultivated rose, which is widespread and well-known in Sweden, but almost unknown elsewhere. Recently (Svensk Botanisk Tidskrift 78: 309-312) H. Merker claimed that it should be identical with R. alba 'Minette' Vibcrt 1819 and that its best position within the genus should be in the alba group. However, both cytology (tetraploidy and normal meiosis) and morphology (especially that of the leaves) speak against this classification. Its taxonomic position remains a mystery, and its origin cannot easily be found in any known wild species or hybrid. The identification with 'Minette' is very probably erroneous.
