...A Parisian florist, we are told, has succeeded in producing a new hybrid rose from the Bourbon rose and Gloire de Rosomène, the flowers of which he had fertilised with the pollen of some Damask and hybrid China roses. The plant is extremely beautiful, the colour bright crimson shaded with Maroon purple, and is further enriched with a powerful fragrance.

A year ago The Times announced the launch of a new rose, The Queen’s London Child, which Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother had consented should bear her name and raise income for the Children’s Country Holidays Fund. The rose was raised by R. Harkness & Company, but it was selected by Robert Mattock, one of the country’s foremost rose growers. It is a typical Mattock selection: vigorous, long-performing and with that extra quality that he always sought in roses that bore his imprimatur — in this case, fragrance. The Queen’s London Child is also one of the best examples of a line of breeding that Mattock pioneered: the miniature shrub, tougher and larger than a true miniature, decked with flowers and an ornament to patios
