The woods around Gulmarg are no less rich in beautiful and interesting plants, not the least of which is the much prized Paeonia emodi, never common and only found growing singly in sheltered spots in half-shade; it usually consorts with a more prolific neighbour which shares its name Podophyllum emodi which is rather similar in habit and appearance.

Our final collecting site was the land making up the Tomakomai Experimental Forest. Here we found Paeonia obovata, with black and red fruits.

Another SE Tibet Paeonia, introduced by Ludlow, Sherriff and Elliott in 1947, P. sterniana, is not yet in general cultivation. Where it has been well grown, as at Keillour Castle and at Edinburgh, it has proved itself a desirable white itself a desirable white flowered herbaceous species allied to P. anomala.
