- 1924: Thomas Woodrow Wilson, 28th president of the United States of America, a pacifist who presided over the American role in World War I, died in Washington, DC. 'President Wilson'
- 1952: Harold LeClaire Ickes. Ickes was at one time Secretary to the Interior and head of the Public Works Administration. 'Harold Ickes' (also known as 'Crepe Myrtle') was a sport of 'Permanent Wave' introduced by Dixie Rose Nursery in 1937.

- 1902: Charles Augustus Lindbergh was born in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of 25, Charles Lindbergh made the first nonstop solo flight from New York to Paris on 20-21 May 1927, in a tiny silver monoplane called the Spirit of St. Louis. He died on 26 August 1974 in Hawaii. 'Lindbergh' was introduced in the same year as his momentous flight.

- 1940: Disney's animated feature, Pinocchio, premiered. Kordes' 1940 Floribunda, 'Pinocchio', has proven to be an important rose parent. Its descendants number in the thousands -- among them are 'Masquerade' and 'Fashion'.

From his most tender years, he evinced a passion for flowers... In 1845, he settled in Luxembourg, and labored as friend and worker at Mons Wilhelm's establishment, where he worked until 1855. It was then that he got to know Mons Jean Soupert, ten years younger than himself, and the two of them founded the company [Soupert & Notting] so well known since that time. 'Pierre Notting'

[don't forget 'Julia's Rose'!]

- 1834: Breeder Jean Soupert. in Luxembourg. He died 16 July 1910. Francois Lacharme introduced a Hybrid Perpetual called 'Jean Soupert' in 1875. In 1929, Soupert & Notting introduced 'Souvenir de Jean Soupert' -- which translates as "in remembrance of Jean Soupert".

- 1819: William Allen Richardson in New Orleans, Louisiana. When he was but two years old his father moved to Lexington, Kentucky, where he resided until his death, in October, 1892... much interested in the cultivation and propagation of Roses. He imported a good many, and in this way became acquainted by correspondence with Madame Ducher. The widow Ducher named 'William Allen Richardson' for a favoured customer, "a rich, American fancier" from Kentucky, 1819-1892.
- 1941: Buffy Sainte-Marie, on the Piapot (Cree) Reservation in Saskatchewan. 'Buffy Sainte-Marie' is a Floribunda from George Mander. Its blooms are a blend of many different colors -- salmon, orange, pink, and yellow.
- DEATHS
- 1920: Robert Edwin Peary, buried in Arlington National Cemetery. He rose to the rank of Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy. In 1888, he married Josephine Diebitsch who accompanied him on many of his expeditions. Josephine accompanied Peary on four expeditions he led to northern Greenland between 1886 and 1900, proving that Greenland was an island and not a continent. On 6 April 6 1909, Peary's party reached the North Pole. 'Mrs. Robert Peary', a white climbing sport of 'Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria', was introduced by Dingee & Conard of Pennsylvania in 1898. There is some confusion about this rose. It has been attributed to both Dickson and De Voecht.

- 1848: Ellen Terry, in Coventry, England. Her parents were actors. She herself was an acclaimed Shakespearean actress and at one time considered the first lady of the British stage. She made her first stage appearance at the ripe old age of eight in The Winter's Tale. Her career spanned more than half a century. She died in 1929. The Ellen Terry Museum is located in the house she lived in for the last thirty years of her life called Smallhythe Place. In 1925, Chaplin Bros. introduced a fragrant light yellow and peach Hybrid Tea called 'Ellen Terry'.
- 1901: Italian sculptor Marino Marini, in Pistoia, Italy. 'Marina Marini' is named for his wife, Mercedes Pedrazzini (affectionately known as Marina). They married in 1938.
- 1932: Actress Elizabeth Taylor. 'Elizabeth Taylor', introduced in 1985, is a popular exhibition rose.
