This rose is a profuse bloomer, and the beauty of its blooms is seldom equalled. No rose garden is complete without it.
(1927) Page(s) 9. Includes photo(s). David O. Dodd A new crimson Rose with great possibilities as a bedder. A magnificent rich crimson, flushed scarlet, with well shaped buds, carried erect and opening into a large beautifully shaped flower. Very free flowering; growth bushy and upright. We consider this fine Rose to be one of the best of its color, a great advance on all other crimson bedding varieties and certainly it is destined to become a great popular favorite. A splendid Rose with no apparent faults.
The Story of David O. Dodd. A red Rose, straight and tall on its erect stem, is a fitting tribute to David O. Dodd, the boy martyr of the Civil War, who was only seventeen when he died for the cause he loved. The Federal troops were occupying Little Rock. David O. Dodd, son of a Pine Bluff man, was sent on business for his father to a point some fifteen miles south west of Little Rock. When David applied for a pass from General J. F. Fagan, the general jokingly remarked that David would make an excellent spy. David was only seventeen, but he had all the splendid dreams of youth. A hope sprang within him that he could serve his beloved South. And when he passed through the Federal lines, he mixed freely with the "Yanks". Who could suspect a seventeen-year-old lad?: David was returning home. On the Hot Springs pike west of Little Rock, he was seized by a foraging party of Union soldiers. "Search him!" said one. David had no pass through the Federal lines, so the search was complete. They stripped him of his clothing, and, hidden in his boots, found damning information, part of which was in code. The young spy was returned to Little Rock under heavy guard, where he was court-martialed, found guilty, and sentenced to be hanged. The youth of the boy, his bravery, and manly spirit excited admiration. General Steele himself offered him his liberty in exchange for the names of those who had given him the information. But David O. Dodd steadfastly refused to tell, and, a few days later, he bravely met a spy's death - hanging. To David O. Dodd, an Arkansas boy, Vestal dedicates this glorious new Arkansas rose - the red 'David O. Dodd'.

NB: 'Summer garden roses' is a quartet of roses that presumably bloom well in summer heat, not once-bloomers... the others are 'William Notting', 'Jonkheer J. L. Mock', and 'Madame Charles Dubreuil'.

(1908) Page(s) 21. A Grand New Rose Helen Gould It has proven itself to be the strongest growing, freest blooming, largest flowering and hardiest rose in existence. It is a better rose for general planting than American Beauty- the dream and hope of every rose grower for years past. It is a strong, dwarf, compact grower, absolutely free from disease of all kind, young plants blooming continuously throughout the year. The flowers are as large as the American Beauty, and are full and perfectly double; the buds beautifully made, long and pointed, produced on long, stiff, erect stems. The color is a warm rosy crimson, the color of a ripe watermelon. Price, 15 cents each; large plants, 40 cents each.
