Dreaming of English roses.

Great article! We all want to like Austin roses and this article give folks who have had bad experiences hope that rose grown on their own roots will be satisfactory garden plants. I have both grafted and non-grafted Austin roses in my California garden. Both are very satisfactory for me, but I sympathize with gardeners with tougher winters where Dr. Huey for roots is more of a liability than an asset.
I would point out the recommendation in the article to use Ironite in a soil mix is a very bad one. Ironite is made from mine tailings from a mine in Arizona that is a Superfund clean up sight. Ironite has been found to contain so much arsenic and lead that the State of Oregon considers the product to be toxic waste. Ironite is NOT a product you should use, unless you want to introduce dangerous levels of lead and arsenic into your garden's soil. Think about future generations of gardeners who will garden where you now grow your roses -- you don't want to poison their garden, do you?

I've never heard of placing dog food nuggets in the soil during planting. Has anyone ever tried this before?

As with roses, all dog food is not made the same. I have roses and dogs, so there will be no kibbles buried with the roses. The Newfie mix would dig the food up. groan
My point here is, read the label on the dog food to make sure you are getting the bonemeal rich mix. The further up the list the ingredient is the more of it there is. The cheap foods are mostly cornmeal and while they might make the worms happy...in a wet environment the corn will also mold terribly.
Alflafla meal/pellets has been a boon to my roses..they are cheaper and the dogs don't like them.

This is an OUTSTANDING article! My only complaint is the Title was so bland, I did not read it sooner! The content is richly entertaining, informative and just irreverent enough to make me howl in agreement with the pointed observations of the author's experience with the foibles of the rose growing industry. THANK YOU for a 'keeper'': this one goes in my file of quotable "good stuff"! Terre Ashmore
