I also wondered about the street name as I passed it on the 101. So I appreciated the explanation. However, I was also likely to break into a chorus of 'Umbriago,' an old Durante song (which probably indicates my age). JimD

Sorry I am late. Just got back from two weeks in New Zealand at the international heritage rose conference. The Santa Barbara authorities are not about to spend the money to change the sign - or maybe it is the state as the highway is their concern. In any case it is terrible that they cannot spell the name of a famous governor of California correctly. If it were Schwarzeneger's name, you could be sure they would.

Welcome back from New Zealand. i am going up to Santa Barbara in about ten days. I will check to see if the city street signs exhibit the same defect or whether the state authorities erred on their own. In the meantime, i will contemplate whether your diminution of the number of 'g's' in the Governator's name was deliberate or inadvertent.

Yee gods! It is a year since you commented on our governor's name - the spelling of it. NO NO NO it was a mistake of mine. How fitting and humiliating. Hung on my own petard. Thanks, bill
