Jessie Boyd. In 1963 Woman’s Day launched an Australia-wide competition for an Australian-raised rose….As a further result of the contest, an entry by Mr. Don Warren of Melbourne, was awarded a special prize by the Editor of Woman’s Day, Mrs. Joan Reeder. This was for a single rose of a clear cherry pink, shading to white at the centre, with decorative stamens. Mr. Warren called and registered it as ‘Charlotte Ives’ my pen name on Woman’s Day. This was one of the nicest compliments paid me during my term as gardening writer for the magazine.

Hybrid Polyanthas crossed with tea roses produced the Hybrid Tea roses as we know them today.    Their reign began with the introduction of La France in 1865 by Pierre Guillot of Lyons, a cross between the Hybrid Perpetual, Mme. Victor Verdier with the Tea Rose Mme. Bravy.   For some years it was still classed as a Hybrid Perpetual which may account for the difference in dates quoted for its introduction (1865-9)
