[From the Chester Chronicle, November 15, 1947:] The death occured ob Friday of Mr. James Charles Thornton, aged 80, of 12, Western Avenue, Blacon, Chester. In 1916 Mr. Thornton introduced a rose called "Independence Day" which won the gold medal of the National Rose Society. This was his first success, and from then until his retirement from Bees in 1944 he introduced over 40 rose varieties...
