Has anyone any knowledge of the c1932 discoverer A Rogers?
I am wondering if he was a figment of imagination from L.P. Rosen, who owned Fernhill Nurseries at Carlingford, NSW. Rosen discovered a more vigorous sport on one of his plants, and in 1932, already knowing of the similarity of ‘Penelope’ and ‘Hugo Roller’, it is my guess that he decided to market his sport that year as both ‘Penelope Climbing’ and ‘Hugo Roller Climbing’.
His gambling exploits on his voyage to Australia, his changing his surname from Persson to Rosen, his expertise in marketing, and the same date of introduction leads me to believe that he may have been one of the first nurseries to deliberately rename a rose for monetary gain. But, just which rose, Penelope or ‘Hugo Roller’ sported is beyond my guesswork.
