2002, Richard Aitken & Michael Looker, Oxford Companion to Australian Gardens
p28. Richard Ardagh (1850-1922), gardener, rosarian and nursery proprietor, was born in Melbourne to Irish parents. He returned from a stint on the goldfields in 1870, four years later he started work with florist James Scott at Hawthorn. Ardagh began in business on his own account in the late 1870s on a site in Auburn, which he increased over two decades from a quarter-acre lot to two acres (0.8 ha) with nursery and display garden. .... ..... At the meeting in 1899 when the National Rose Society of Victoria was inaugurated, Ardagh occupied the chair. After his death in 1922, tributes acknowledged that for many years he had been one of Australia’s leading rosarians.
