Well, I guess you'll have to "have it out" with the tag, as this is the way this rose came labeled. The tag is still on the rose, and it reads "Don Juan". And if it is not a Don Juan, it would not shock me one bit, as so many plants are sold under the wrong label.
What rose do you suggest it is?

The rose in your photo is beautiful. I would guess that your rose got mislabeled somewhere along the line. If you compare it to the other rose photos for Don Juan I think you will notice a difference. As to identifying the rose you have, I think I will defer that one to someone with more experience than I have at this point. Surely someone out there will have some recommendations!

Hi Cass--I just recently purchased this rose and the first bloom looks nothing like yours. I had expected something more like your photo, but mine is plain red--not purple at all. Do you think this will change with warmer weather, or more (or less) sun exposure, or perhaps as the plant matures? I am pretty disappointed in my rose so far....

Sally, mine has never bloomed plain red, but then mine has only bloomed twice, so that's not saying much. You can see from Anastasia's bloom in Southern California that the color heads toward maroon.
Take a close look at the foliage on your plant and try to compare the foliage you can see on pictures of Night Owl to be sure your plant is correctly labeled.

Thank you--I do notice the bloom is darker today than yesterday, so perhaps it will purple more with age. I just expected more purple in the buds and newly opened bloom from all the raves about it's color in the ads, etc.

Hi Sally, have the blooms on your Night Owl turned dark purple yet? I purchased this climbing rose before the spring of 2007, and although it is doing great, the blooms are not the color described on the label (my husband was a bit devastated by this, as he chose this rose for the garden). The color has a bit of red in it. I did notice the color turn darker in the later blooms (September blooms), and I am not quite sure why this is happening. I am just excited the color appears to be changing to a deeper "purple". Although I took a picture of it (and posted it), the digital camera did not capture the color very well (the photograph color looks red).
As the plant becomes more established in my garden, I hope the color continues to change to the one described on the label.

Hi--Thought I had replied to your email, but don't see any posting there from me--sorry. My Night Owl looks much like yours--it is more purple than the very first blooms, but still more wine red than purple. Certainly it is nothing like the advertising photos represent. I am waiting to see what the spring bloom brings and hoping for more of the purple coloring--will let you know if it is better this year.

It is a bit disappointing to find a rose so far different than the advertising represents--I am willing to give it time too, but it is going to have to get a LOT darker to come anywhere close to the pictures I have seen from suppliers of this rose. It is an unusual color from across the garden, though, and I am not entirely sorry I purchased it in any case.

Hi Again--
Just wanted to update you on my Night Owl spring bloom--it actually is very purple! And very dark too. The flowers deepen with age, so are not as purple as they first open, but I am pleasantly surprised to say they are now much like the advertised pictures of this rose. I tried to get some photos, but could only get an approximate color to the real thing by tweaking the color afterwards--the photos look much more red than the bloom actually is, but I will try to send a pic for you to see. Hope you are having the same experience with your Night Owl.

Hi Sally, glad to hear you are enjoying your night owl. Mine started to bloom, and as in your case, the color of my rose is deeper this spring, but not as deep as indicated in the label. I have found that digital cameras do not capture the true hue of certain colors. I posted pictures of my night owl below. Again, the color of my rose shows a bit red in the pictures, which is not representative of the true color of the rose.

Yes, Digital pix are wonderful, but I have the same problem as you with certain colors--especially dark reds and purples. I am glad your Night Owl is more satisfactory also. I am not sure that, in spite of the better color, this is going to be a favorite of mine--kind of wish I had waited to see it somewhere before purchasing one for my garden. The jury is still out on this rose for me--I am a bit disappointed in the bloom size and over-all effect.

I love the way the this arbor looks. I recently bought two of these roses (golden showers), and they've yet to grow. I hope they grow to be as beautiful as yours!

They sometimes take a little time to settle in and bloom (typical for a climbing rose) just wait until your second season in the ground, I'm sure your Golden Showers will be beautiful.

This appears to be the popular floribunda, 'Iceberg,' bred in 1958, not the 2002 florist's hybrid tea, which has many more petals and is for the cut flower industry.
