Miriam Wilkins is an incredible rose! Got a band this spring from Rogue Valley, but was not able to get it in the ground until the middle of July, a few days before the heatwave hit around here (southeast VT). I did not have much hope that she would make it through high 90's and humidity as she looked like she was dying, but actually she was only going dormant. A few weeks after the heat broke, leaf buds appeared, then leaves and buds, and then blossoms of the most beautiful rich pink. And what a delicious sweet rose scent! Now she is about 2 feet high by 18 inches wide, covered with healthy leaves and offering me lots of buds. Very pleased with this rose AND with Rogue Valley Roses. Now, if I am lucky, she will make it through a zone 5 winter!

We've been hanging for eleven years...how did Miriam Wilkins weather your winters?

Just planted my Star of the Republic about 6 weeks ago. First blossom opened today. Had to report on how heavenly the scent is. Wasn't really expecting anything this special. Very strong, rich, sweet myrrh scent with a fruity damask undertone. Fantastic! The bloom itself is also beautiful, apricoty-pink with yellow highlights. Love the bushy shape. So glad I finally decided to give this rose a try.

Hi,

I just got Star of the Republic. I was wondering how this rose is doing in your garden, 10 years later. Also, did you keep it a shrub shape? I am thinking of growing it as a climber. I would really appreciate your observations and thoughts about this rose. Thank you.

I grow in zone 6b (Ohio).

Bought this as own-root from Regan Nursery, the root is huge. The plant is big & vigorous & healthy, but the blooms are small and the scent is light. Survived zone 5a winter with more than 1.5 feet of green canes. Now having 30 buds as 2nd-year own-root in 4 hours of morning sun.

Just planted Jean Cocteau (Tequila Supreme) as a band from Heirloom Roses about 5-6 weeks ago. It is already covered with buds and blooms! Blossoms are a beautiful orange/pink with yellow at the base of the petals. This rose has turned out to be everything that I hoped it would be. if I am lucky, it will make it through a zone 5 Vermont winter.

Did it make it through the winter?

I cannot tell yet. We still have snow everywhere! Will report back later, probably in a few weeks or so.

I am sorry to report that although this rose did make it through a Vermont zone 5 winter, it did NOT make it through our extremely long and cold spring. So beautiful and blooming all the time. I will miss him!

I'm sorry to hear that! This is one of my favorite roses.
