It's been suggested that some nurseries grew their understocks from seed: there is a yellow form of R indica major at Rookwood necropolis, but it is much less convincingly yellow when grown elsewhere. The single form at Rookwood is unstable; cuttings grown from it range from single to the usual form. Thelangerin Mauve can be bought from the Friends of Bishop's Lodge. Tempting to try breeding from it.

Spring, Clare Valley, South Australia. Climbing 4m up a power pole. This time of year we realise how many remnant understocks there are in old and abandoned gardens.
