Remember that this is the perspective of a person living in a place with lots of hot weather and dry air: I’ve had Golden Celebration for about 10 years now in Just morning sun. It has grown great with new canes every year. However, I hate it! The flowers open up from bud to fully open in one day and then the petals fall. I love to give rose bouquets to people but I can’t put it in bouquets because of the short vase life. It also has NO FRAGRANCE IN OUR HOT WEATHER (and by that I really mean all year)!!! And then to add on to that, it blooms 2 times a year. Yes, at these times it’s full of flowers but they blow out so quickly it’s ridiculous. So, this year I said that’s it. I didn’t have the guts to shovel prune it but I moved to a lesser place in the yard.

Thank you for your review. It seems a lot of DAs blow their petals rather fast which is a pet peeve of mine too.

I am in zone 10b about 5 mile to ocean heavy marine layer May -June. Dry summers. Summer highs 80s ( few days in 90s). GC is wonderful in my garden. Tons of blooms. Long lasting blooms. Healthy. No black spot even when I have others with black spot or powdery mildew. Absolutely a stunning bloom.

Bronze Star is definitely one of my Top 10 favorite bushes out of about 300 that I’ve tried! I have it in a full sun location all day. However, I do give it and the other roses next to it in the garden a little watering down every morning by 8AM in the hot months from late June until November. This makes a huge difference in the health of my my bushes! Just spraying them down like this hydrates them and results in no issues with thrips or spider mites on any of my plants. It is my favorite Rose in the yellow and yellow/orange category. This is why:
1. It blooms and repeats better than just about any bush I have - even in the 100’s temps! Desert temps and in winter it rarely ever even gets down to 32 degrees.
2. It usually stays between 5 and 5 and a half feet tall -perfect for sniffing.
3. The fragrance is Medium-Strong Tea. It’s never as strong as the strongest fragrances but the fragrance is ALWAYS THERE despite the heat.
4. The foliage is super healthy and full so it doesn’t get sunburned like most of my other bushes.
5. The size of the stems varies completely depending on how much water you give it (by drip system every other day is good in the 100 temps but let it drip a half hour or more each time) and a mulch of 3” is necessary too. So, if the stems are shorter than you’d like, just water more.
6. It has these beautiful kind of lacy edges to the petals.
7. It is in most of the bouquets that I cut for people because it blooms all the time! However, the downside is that it tends to last about 4 days in a vase as compared to some varieties that will last a week in the vase. When I give rose bouquets to people, it is often the first one that they ask the name of it because the color of that rich golden orange that ages to a bright, gorgeous yellow is Stunning!
I LOVE THIS ROSE!!!

Thank you for the very detailed review. I’m in inland No. California myself and just bought a nice plant of Bronze Star, your review provides so much good info on what to expect. I think you are so right, in dry climates rose foliage loves a good soak. How is the repeat on this variety?

La Park is a yellow to apricot ground with subtle pink striping, less contrasty than many other stripes. It blooms freely , and has a nice dense compact habit, good general health. The fragrance is highly variable...sometimes faint, grassy and unimpressive, at other times wonderfully strong and perfumey. It keeps its stripes well in hot weather, when many striped varieties are nearly solid colored. I do wish the blooms lasted a day or two longer, they are a bit on the loose side. Otherwise I think it is a good addition to the garden, and I like that it’s named for Park Seed Company, whose catalog was my wishlist for many winters.

Good review! Your photos look better than the ones on the Jackson & Perkins website. I've toyed with getting this one...I'm in Houston and I see you're in Texas...how did this one do over the summer?

Hello Dross,
La Park did not have any issue with the hot summer, it was a real trooper. Very nice habit and good rebloom, able to kept decent petal count and bloom size. Only issue is the blooms are a bit fleeting. By autumn it had grown into a good sized shapely bush covered with nice buds, but alas an early frost precluded a great fall flush. Looking forward to good things from this one, definitely a keeper!

I’ve enjoyed reading your comments on various roses as well!
