If you go to the rose page for 'Peace', and click on the "References" tab, you will find comments from various authors about this wonderful rose.

You can also purchase a used book written by Antonia Ridge, For The Love Of A Rose, which will tell you the story of 'Peace'.

Smiles,

Lyn

This rose was called Peace at the suggestion of my grandfather.

Towards the end of World War II, Monsieur Meilland wrote to my grandfather telling him he had bred a remarkable rose and wished to name it after him in gratitude for what he had done in liberating France from Nazi occupation. My grandfather was General Sir Alan Brooke, later Field Marshal Viscount Alanbrooke, head of the British Armed Forces, Chief of the Imperial General Staff and the man responsible for devising and driving the global military strategy that won the war for the Allies.

He wrote back to Meilland and said he was honoured and flattered to be asked, but declined explaining that his name would soon be fogotten, however he could think of nothing more apt and lasting than simply to call it "Peace". And so it was named.
Alanbrooke had some of the first Peace roses to be grown in England which, when he retired after the war, he tended with much pleasure for many years. And I am happy to report that at least one specimen of this original stock is alive and well in the garden of his son, Victor, the current Viscount Alanbrooke, nearly sixty years on.

One day when I get time I will post a photo of what has come to be known in my family as "the original Peace".

Good! You've got at least sixty years of Peaceful pleasure ahead of you. And hopefully you'll be telling your grandchildren how it came to be named. Thank you so much for your kind response.

My thanks for posting the story too. I hadn't heard how the name Peace was decided on. I grew up seeing them everywhere. Our grandchildren enjoy the ones in our yard.
