I have loved roses all of my life. I have memories of my Father tending to a plot of about 25 roses when I was a little girl. During my youth and early adulthood I had no time for plants. Then I moved on to motherhood and a busy career. I am now ready to turn my love of roses into a hobby. I leveled my backyard two summers ago and am rebuilding the entire yard to include a fairly large rose garden. I planted my first bareroot in February 2012. This has been a mixed bag of successes and failures. I am learning a lot. I enjoy researching roses and trying to pick varieties that meet my criteria. This first year I have 36 roses. I have included Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, Grandfloras, Climbers, Hybrid Pepetuals, a China, Minature and Mini Florals. I plan to add about 20 more. I have a couple of favorites so far, Betty Boop, Angel Face LCl, Mutabilis and Perfume Delight. In June 2018 I sold my house and rose garden in California and am now on the coast in North Carolina. I am in cold hardiness zone 8a. We reach temperatures over 90 a few times during a typical summer. My biggest challenge in my new environment will be the high humidity and the sandy soil with very little natural organic material. Now in 2020 I have planted my first roses. I have gone with a few tried a true from my California garden. Mutabilis, Sally Holmes, Zephrin Droghin, Queen of Violettes and new to me (2) Fourth of July climbers. I am adding 3 Julia Child and maybe a Perfume Delight.
